What happens if there is no snow?

You go inland, or you go on wheels. Tromsø is mild for its latitude and gets midwinter thaws that turn trails to ice, with mid-to-late March near town the worst window. Tamokdalen holds snow when the coast does not, which is why it is sold as the most snow-secure area near Tromsø. Outside the snow season entirely, kennels switch to wheeled wagons and carts, and those only run when it is cold enough to be safe for the dogs.

Average snow depth in Tromsø peaks at about 41 cm in January and is down to 26 cm by March and 14 cm in April. Inland is a different climate: Tamokdalen runs −10 to −20 °C with little precipitation, so a coastal thaw does not reach it. If your dates are late in the season, book inland rather than close to town — the reasoning is at husky camps near Tromsø. If weather does cancel your tour, operators normally reschedule or refund, which is why the husky day belongs early in your trip rather than on your last morning.

Handler’s tip

Between August and October there is a wheeled wagon product from a dog yard at Straumsbukta on Kvaløya. It is a different activity from sledding, but the dogs, the yard and the handlers are the same. Snow month by month at best time for husky sledding.
