The age ladder
Sixteen to drive. That is the one number that holds everywhere, and it is not negotiable at the bus door. The short self-drive with lunch, the advanced Camp Tamok tour and the ten-hour evening combination are all 16 and up for that reason.
Seven and up covers the 4.5-hour flagship out to Breivikeidet and the seven-hour Tamokdalen day. Children ride while an adult drives, and both count as participants. Guided rides in general are sold as suitable for all ages, with one operator quoting a minimum of 4 to 7 depending on which tour, and one operator saying it does not recommend full-day trips for under-5s. The evening combination adds a height requirement of 130 cm on top of its age limit, because of the snowmobile leg.
Below 7, the honest answer is the kennel. The puppy-training day is suitable for all ages with adult supervision, includes a one to one-and-a-half hour hike with the young dogs, and supplies rain clothes and boots. Weight, and the limit that is often misread
The common figure is 120 kg per person, applied on the Tamokdalen day, the advanced tour and the evening combination. The short self-drive product sets 118 kg per person and also asks that you can balance on one leg. Some operators publish a per-sled limit instead — around 180 kg for a guided ride, 170 kg for self-drive. Those are different measurements and must not be merged; a sled limit is for two people combined. At least one operator sets no weight limit at all and instead reserves the right to restrict participation on safety grounds, for the dog or the musher.
Pregnancy, injuries and mobility
No sledding product here accepts pregnant guests. The short self-drive also excludes back, knee and arm injuries and heart conditions. Mobility impairments and wheelchair use exclude you across the board, including from the kennel day, which cannot take wheelchair users either. Animal allergies exclude you everywhere, which sounds obvious until you consider that you will be standing in a yard of up to 200 dogs.
The evening combination requires medical conditions to be declared, and guides on the advanced tour may refuse participation on safety grounds. Neither of those is a formality.
